Because it is one of the most chemically inert compounds available, PTFE can be used with an extremely wide range of fluids. Also known as Teflon, PTFE is used with highly aggressive fluids such as aromatic or chlorinated hydrocarbons, acids, caustics, ketones and acetates. Its properties provide excellent flex life and moderate abrasion resistance. In addition, PTFE complies with FDA 21 CFR 177 and USP Class VI standards for food, beverage and pharmaceutical applications. Because PTFE is non-elastic, a backup diaphragm of a different material must be used to provide flexibility and memory. Material options for backup diaphragms are Neoprene, Saniflex and high temperature Buna-N.

Shaft configurations: In wet-bearing designs, the shaft is supported from above the mounting plate using antifriction, grease-lubricated bearings in the pedestal, and is additionally supported from below the mounting plate with product-lubricated sleeve bearings. The choice for the outer bearings includes ceramic, silicon carbide, siliconized carbide, carbon-filled PTFE and glass-filled PTFE. For extreme conditions, the shaft journals (or inner bearings) are constructed of ceramic materials. Wet bearing designs tap fluid from the pump discharge and route it to each bearing, since the upper wet bearings are not flooded when the liquid level is low. When the pumped fluid contains solid particles that can damage the wet bearings, an independent clean-water flush must be used.

Various rubber components are used in the manufacture of diaphragms and a nylon fabric mesh is used for dimensional stability and additional strength. Elastomers such as Neoprene, Buna-N, EPDM, (Nordel) and Viton are the most frequently used. Their chief characteristic is flexibility which allows more volume to be displaced. Thermoplastic materials are also available for manufacturing diaphragms. These are produced by an injection moulding process and require no fabric reinforcement for dimensional stability or tensile strength. The most popular are polyurethane, Hytrel, Santoprene and Teflon. Polyurethane gives excellent general purpose diaphragms which are the most economical of all, with extremely good flex life.
