Based on previous positive experiences Puralube had with one of SPX’s pump brands, Bran+Luebbe, SPX was shortlisted as a supplier for a replacement pump. Puralube ultimately selected Bran+Luebbe’s three head design NOVADOS series 3H6 diaphragm pump with PTFE double diaphragm. This technology achieves the required flow rate and the necessary discharge pressure within a small footprint area. The pump selected is fitted with a 55 kW drive motor that produces approx. 4900 l/h vacuum gas oil from a stroking speed of 156 min-1 and has a discharge pressure of 90 bar.

A technology that has recently been introduced provides a new tool to a user’s toolbox when trying to select the right pump technology for chemical pumping applications. The electric double diaphragm pump has combined the well-known diaphragm pump technology with the control and energy-saving benefits of electric drives. This new technology also offers some unique advantages.

AODD pumps are very reliable since they have very few moving parts and components that can wear. They are easily dismantled for maintenance or diaphragm replacement. For example, Neoprene is outstanding for general purpose as a low cost diaphragm that delivers the highest flex life. Teflon-based diaphragms are generally the most expensive, with other materials lying in between, so while the diaphragm used must be compatible with the fluid to be pumped, care should be taken to make sure that it is not over-specified, leading to unnecessary costs.

Although Design Mark Industries keeps its chemicals in a vented, explosion-proof room, the supplier of membrane switches, keypads, and touchscreens sought to further improve the safety and efficiency of transferring acetone and acetate-based chemicals from 55-gallon drums into quart and 5-gallon containers.  The chemicals are used in the screen printing process of printed circuitry and graphic overlays. Production Supervisor Vincent Francisco ruled out manual pouring because of the potential of injury and lack of control in dispensing. Instead, he utilized a variety of traditional pumps including rotary, siphon, and lever-action, but found them all unsatisfactory. “I was replacing the pumps once or twice a year because they kept breaking down, delivered imprecise amounts, and were not designed as completely self-contained, sealed systems,” says Francisco. After considerable research online, Francisco decided to utilize a sealed chemical pump system from GoatThroat. “I consider using [GoatThroat] pumps a ‘best practice’ technique because the barrels remain upright and the entire system is sealed so there is never an issue with exposure or VOCs when transferring chemicals,” says Francisco. According to Francisco, the sealed pump system is intuitive to use because it operates like a beer tap. “Just pump the plunger a few times, open the spigot and dispense.  You have full control over how much is dispensed, even the tiniest amounts, or you can leave it open for a continuous flow.  It delivers the precise amount needed.” Francisco adds that the pumps are built for longevity. Over the past 11 years, he estimates that his company has saved thousands of dollars by eliminating the cost of replacement pumps. “I’ve only replaced one of our three pumps over that time due to constant use, and we could have used it longer,” says Francisco.   Allergy Laboratories Inc., a FDA licensed pharmaceutical manufacturer of biological extracts for the diagnostic testing and therapeutic treatment of allergies, also uses a sealed pump system to transfer acetone from 55 gallon drums to 1 gallon containers for a variety of processes. According to Charles Cheek, facility manager for Allergy Laboratories, the pharmaceutical chemical delivery process must be very clean and no foreign material can be introduced into the acetone.  Because acetone is highly flammable, he was concerned about using an electric pump that could potentially create a spark.  As a result, he decided to purchase a pump that had no electrical or moving parts that could create a hazard. “We’ve found GoatThroat pumps to be a much safer way to transport chemical liquids,” says Cheek, who utilizes a pneumatic adaptor accessory to supply pressure via in-house compressed air. “There is no spillage, splatter, overpouring, leaking, or VOCs because the system is self-contained. There is no sprayback and we do not get chemicals on our hands.  It is a nice, clean delivery system.”

The Tip-Tite drum dumper is designed for use with poorly flowing or agglomerated materials, allowing rapid transfer of free- and non-free-flowing bulk solid materials dust-free. Similar in performance to open chute dumpers but with total dust containment, the outlet on the downstream end of the dumper is nearly equal in area to that of the drum opening, allowing agglomerated materials and large chunks to be discharged with minimal possibility of bridging. Drums 30-55 gal. are positioned on the dumper platform, which is raised by a hydraulic cylinder, seating the rim against the circular end of the discharge transition. A second hydraulic cylinder tips the platform-hood assembly and drum, stopping at dump angles of 45, 60 or 90 degrees with a motion-dampening feature. At full rotation, the transition outlet mates with the gasketed square inlet on the lid of a hopper or downstream process equipment, allowing a pneumatically-actuated slide gate valve to be opened and closed for total or partial discharge with no dusting.
